santalum album Family
Santalaceae
The Sandalwood tree is native to Southern Asia. It is a parasitic tree and for the first few years of it's life grows on the roots of other trees. It has leathery leaves and pinkish purple flowers. Sandalwood can grow to a height of about 12-15m. (40-50ft.) when maturity is reached, at this age the heartwood has achieved it’s greatest circumference and greatest oil content. The tree has to be at least thirty years old before production of the essential oil can begin. Mysore, India is reputedly where the 'best' sandalwood oil is produced. Strict rules and regulations apply to control indiscriminate and illegal felling of this precious tree and an extensive replanting programme exists to replace legally felled trees.
